Going Green - The Environmental Issue
There is an overwhelming consensus that global warming is real, and that the reduction of carbon emissions is becoming more imperative to individuals and businesses. Additionally, there is increasing pressure on businesses to be regarded as proactive in implementing programs that can have a positive effect on reducing C02 emissions.
Where does all of this CO2 come from?
Did you know that …
- The root cause of almost all human induced climate change is Carbon Dioxide (CO2).
- CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere have risen by 1/3 since the industrial revolution, and they are expected to double in the next 100 years.
- Temperatures, which have varied less than one degree Celsius since the dawn of civilization, are projected to rise between two and four degrees Celsius during the next century.
- Scientists predict that such rapid changes will cause major and severe harm to social, economic, and environmental systems.
Reducing travel Is key
- Travel is among the leading contributors of C02 emissions. And travel reduction, for non-critical matters, has been noted to be the most effective means of reducing a company’s carbon footprint.
Putting it in perspective
- Short-Trip Road Travel: An employee’s 70-mile car trip, to a separate office location, once a month for a year – at a total of 840 miles traveled – contributes approximately 1,035 pounds of C02 into the atmosphere.
- Air Travel: One staff member’s flight from Houston to London to see a customer produces more than 4,500 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions.
- The number of new trees required to offset one person’s round trip on a commercial airline is:
- New York to Los Angeles = 3.2 trees
- New York to London = 4.5 trees
- New York to Singapore = 12.5 trees
- Three trees need to exist for 50 years to compensate for one ton of C02 emissions.
